Social networking: On balance

Facebook can be hazardous to your grades. Ditto for other social networking sites, computer games and  Xbox 360, Playstation and Nintendo Wii. Ben Alexander got so fixated on World of Warcraft that he spent nearly every worldofwarcraftwaking hour playing the game and eventually flunked out of the University of Iowa.  But there are plusses to social networks and games. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and LinkedIn can facilitate social connections and friendships. Users build their web and communication skills. They learn the etiquette of the online world. Games are a major medium of social interaction for young adults and often a stress-free way to break the ice in new situations. Balance in the use of games and social networks is the key. In most cases, leave the games for the weekends and then restrict yourself to an hour or so. Limit your social networking time too. Make your studies a priority and you won’t regret it.
