Asperger Ascent

Tips for Young Adults

First week of college

dormThere are few things that will test your flexibility and unflappability more than getting your son or daughter set up for and settled into the college environment. So many things to think about. How to organize the dorm room, their workstation and their filing system for maximum effectiveness. How to help them connect with roommates, suite mates and floor mates as well as resident advisors. Making sure they know where and how to do laundry, troubleshoot computer problems, pick up mail, work out. And then there’s the other stuff like book pickup, class schedules and whereabouts and signups for campus activities. For the parent of a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, all these challenges pale when measured against the sheer blessing of  knowing your child has triumphed over SATs, social awkwardness and high school hurdles — and made it to college. Hallelujah!
